2011 Old Dominion Kennel Club PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 01 July 2011

I would like to thank the Potomac Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club and the Old Dominion Kennel Club of Northern Virginia for inviting me over the pond to judge the breed at their Show. Many thanks to my Steward on the day, she was very efficient and kept me moving smoothly right along. Rich Newberger deserves an award for services above the call of duty for the time he spent as organiser and taxi driver.  Thank you Rich. Thanks to those who accepted my decisions and who enjoyed a beer or two with us in the evenings. Cheers ! As an honest appraisal, I struggled to find type and balance as I understand it coupled with the standards desirables. There were inverted canines and incorrect bites, loads of excess weight, body definition on the whole was poor with many appearing “tube like”, both the heavier and lighter animals. A Staffordshire should be shown with reasonable body definition at the very least. That said, I was pleased with my main winners, my BOB I would happily have in my back garden and my RBOB would I think find the admirers to hold her own in the UK.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Puppy, 6 & Under 9 Months Dogs.
1  Aguillard, Gonzales & L & J Caswell`s WAVEMAKER SPINCASTER.

Topsize brindle and still very much the puppy. Very attractive head with nothing exaggerated, good bite with reasonably strong foreface for his age. Dark eye neat ears and clean head and muzzle gave good expression. Correct forequarter angulation, well padded feet, light in loin, decent bend of stifle, tight coat. Moved well from all angles.

2  Addison`s DISTAFF STRAIGHT NO CHASER

Heavier black brindle with white chest markings . Strong in the head, inverted canines both sides, dark eye, ears untidy, close in the forequarters, down on pasterns, ribbed well back and his neck flows smoothly over withers to topline moved ok

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Puppy, 9 & Under 12 Months Dogs.
1  Caulk`s DJ'S A TASTE OF CAVIAR.

Strong headed brindle pup. Couldn`t balance him, overheaded for me, level bite, excess stop, dark eye neat ears, brisket to below elbow and very soft to the touch, down on pasterns, good bend of stifle, but movement was poor.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. 12 & Under 18 Months Dogs.
1  Massie`s AKTION'S HARDIN UP YOUR GAME.

Top sized red dog with darker mask. Dark eyes and neat ears good bite. Stands foresquare, feet turn out slightly at pasterns, light nails. Decent rib. Reasonable rear muscle tone with a good bend of stifle and the rear action was ok but  paddled from the front. Could be fitter.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Bred by Exhibitor Dogs.
1  Dineley & Ahmad`s CLANDARA'S DOMI.

Heavy Black brindle with good head proportions. Neat ears and a reasonably dark eye. Unfortunate mouth fault, Scores well in forequarters, straight and strong with feet turning out slightly, decent bone, good shoulder, brisket to elbow, good bend of stifle with hocks well let down, good columns of support, coat coarse. Moved ok and would benefit greatly from carrying less weight about with him.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Open Dogs.
1 P & K Trask & J Heller`s MOONSTRUCK BLUE HANG LOOSE HARLEY.

Blue fawn. Due to his colour, his pigmentation could be darker, but that was not going to ever detract from the rest of him. Wonderful expression on this dog, tight in the foreface, good bite with big strong impressive canines, ample in the stop correct round well placed eyes looking forward, neat ears. Skull had width and depth. good forequarters with ample bone, up on his pasterns plenty of forechest, brisket to elbow, good spring of rib ( as opposed to barrel ribs) carried back, decent fitness good rear angulation, and muscular development, good second thigh development and a tight coat. Movement was just what is required, Free powerful and agile with economy of effort. I had no hesitation in awarding him Winners dog and later best of breed.

2 Y & E Parr`s SURESTAFF URANIUS.

Attractive standard dark brindle who has more definition in the head appearing shorter in the foreface and having more stop than 1 but is not overdone in any way. Well placed rose ears and dark eyes looking forward give correct expression. Skull had width and depth. Again straight and strong in the quarters, up on pasterns, neat feet, brisket to elbow, neck flowed well over withers and into topline. Reasonable fitness levels and body definition from above and the side. Reserve Winners Dog. Bridesmaid twice in two days, hope he gains his title. More than worthy.

3  Kester`s HEAVEN'S WARRIOR DE EL DORADOSTAFF.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Puppy, 9 & Under 12 Months Bitches.
1 Clay`s GLENMAR'S DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE.

An attractive strongly pigmented, red puppy, dark eyes, ears are ok She is strong in the head with  strong foreface with good set on of muzzle, good bite clean in the lip, strong straight forequarters, dark nails. Brisket slightly below elbow, reasonably light in loin, good bend of stifle with hocks well let down, ribbed well back, moved and handled well……Winners bitch and Best Puppy

2 Nicolai`s HOMEBREWED BLACK PEARL OF CIERA.

Black bindle, lighter than 1 but not lacking in strength. Good head proportions with appropriate length of muzzle housing correct bite, neat rose ears and dark eyes. Much of 1 applies here and it was a tight decision, preferred the feet and topline on winner…..reserve winners bitch.

3 Roseman & Kester`s ELIVID'S SHAKEN NOT STIRRED.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. 12 & Under 18 Months Bitches.
1 Y & L Parr`s ZOELLIES BRAVE ANGEL

Tall topsize bitch black brindle with attractive head of good proportions with very typical expression strong muzzle of correct length with strength of under jaw , dark eye and neat ear, good bone to forequarters with brisket to elbow, neck flowed well into withers. Possibly a shade narrow in the front, reasonably well let down at hock, Good body definition moved well.

2 Newberger`s MARSTAFF LIL MYSTERY AT HI-IMPACT.

Brindle bitch with an attractive typical headshape, Good body definition provided by a spring of rib carried back and a lightness of loin and helped on by being in good condition. Preferred rear angulation of 1.

3 Markey Porcher & O Brian`s THRASHERS FIFTH ELEMENT @ CLOVERDALE.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Bred by Exhibitor Bitches.
1 Carter & Bryant`s SHORTY ROCKS FIONA FAIRESTOFTHEMALL.

Standard brindle bitch with white socks,  Too strong in the head for my ideal, but with good set on of muzzle and depth to head, it is not without virtue. Neat rose ear, dark eyes and reasonably tight lip. Straight and strong in the forequarters, feet turning out slightly at pasterns, good spring of rib, brisket to elbow with reasonable tuck up could be lighter in the loin,  good bend of stifle, hocks well let down moved well keeping her topline.

2 L & J Caswell`s WAVEMAKER HULA POPPER.

Rangy blk brindle, very attractive head and expression strong under jaw, reasonably dark eye, good length of muzzle clean in the lip, up on the leg, a shade narrow, feet could be tidier slightly over angulated in the rear, not the body definition of 1  brisket above elbow
3 Heller & Quinn`s MOONSTRUCK LOOK'N FOR AKTION.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Open Bitches.
1 Henson & Jones` TMT ABSOLUTE ABABEEL.

Brindle Old fashioned type of bitch, with what may be described as a plain head by some, dark eye decent expression, good length of muzzle ears could be shade tidier, neck flows well into shoulders ribbed well back brisket to elbow, no body definition when viewed from above, strong neck of good length, good columns of support good spring of rib, kept level topline on the move and moved well. Please try and get a waist on this bitch

2 L & J Caswell`s CAZOMIC LOOK BUSY.

Black brindle. Shade lighter in bone than 1 ears could be tidier and eyes could be darker, good length of muzzle, not as strong as 1  and clean in the lip, strong under jaw, neck flowed well into topline,  good spring of rib, possibly appearing a shade long, decent level of fitness better level of fitness and better bend of stifle than 1

3 Clark & Hornberg`s TOMORROW'S BRINDLE TRIX.

Best Bitch and reserve best of breed.

Lemke`s DayDream Sin with a Grin.

Feminine black brindle with good expression provided by dark round eyes looking straight ahead, neat rose ears, tight in lip and strong in under jaw. My preference would be for a shade more length on her muzzle and a little less accentuated stop. Her skull is deep through, neck of good reach flows smoothly into withers and on into topline.  Straight strong forequarters, with brisket to elbow. Spring of rib easy to see. Good levels of fitness shown by her tuck up and a light well muscled loin giving good body definition between ribs and pelvis. Moved well

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Veteran, 7 Years & Over Dogs.
1 dare & Clas` CH NORTH STARS RED CORVETTE.

Red dog dark eye looking forward,  good length of muzzle, ears could be tidier decent expression, strong forequarters reasonably fit for his class, good bend of stifle well let down in hock tight coat and moved ok.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS. Veteran, 7 Years & Over Bitches.
1 Carter`s CH ELECTRA MAT-STAFF KOMISARZ.

Very strong blk brindle bitch, Overstrong for me, ears not the tidiest, dark eye good set on of muzzle brisket below elbow, still strong in the rear, moved ok ….

2 Wilson`s Tomorrow’s East of Eden.12 year old white, looked to be enjoying herself, dark eye tight in the lip, good bend of stifle, in my opinion would definitely benefit from less access to the cookie jar….thank you for bringing them though…it was my pleasure.

2011 PSBTC Stafford Extravaganza / COLUMBIA  TERRIER  ASSOCIATION  OF  MARYLAND,  INC.
FRIDAY  APRIL  22ND.  2011.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Potomac Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their show.  It was a wonderful experience and l thoroughly enjoyed my day.  I would also like to thank my ring steward who done a superb job and kept it all running very smoothly.  A very special thanks must go to Rich Newberger who looked after Imelda and me from the moment we arrived and took us to see all the sights.  I was very pleased with my main winners on the day that could hold their own anywhere in the world.  I found quite a few dogs with incorrect bites, inverted canines, high ears and carrying an awful lot of excess weight and very long nails, also a lot of the dogs could do with having their tails trimmed properly.  These small little details help in the overall presentation of the dogs. A Stafford should be a fit dog.
